Discover Our Projects: General and Specific

Discovering the Future of Machining Solutions

Located just outside of Portland, Oregon, is OMIC R&D a 60,000 square foot specialized research center dedicated to advancing manufacturing for companies both big and small. Industry faces challenges every day in their workflows, whether it’s an inspection challenge, part cycle times are too slow, or you are weighing the advantages of capital investment.

At OMIC R&D, we have a team of dedicated researchers working in the areas of subtractive manufacturing (traditional machining), additive manufacturing (industrial 3D printing), materials development and inspection. We are proud to focus on applied R&D, projects that quick turnaround, cost effective, and produce results that can be implemented directly on the shop floor.

Specific Projects: Tailored Research

Your vision. Our facility. Specific Projects at OMIC R&D are where individual aspirations meet our technological capabilities. Open to both members and non-members, these projects allow you to utilize our state-of-the-art production floor through the expertise of the OMIC R&D researchers.

What sets OMIC R&D Specific Projects apart from other universities or National Laboratories?

1. All project labor is at-cost, projects are costed using individual researcher rates.

2. No indirect, mark-up, or administrative costs are added to the purchase of goods or 3rd party services. Any discounts granted to OMIC R&D are passed along.

3. Results of projects are not shared or published; project information is never disclosed the project sponsor retains all IP rights.

4. Project sponsors are encouraged to spend time at OMIC R&D to participate in their research

OMIC R&D is dedicated to making research available to all. By working at cost and not charging indirect for purchased good, companies of any size can undertake projects with exotic cutting tools or unique materials. We also realize that the work we do here could have a large economical impact for a company, that is why we never share the results, and we encourage project sponsor participation.

General Projects: Collaborative Innovation

At OMIC R&D, our General Projects are the epitome of collaborative innovation. Selected during our Roadmapping Sessions, these projects are the collective vision of our Tier 1 and Tier 2 members. Here, the future of industry is discussed, defined, and developed. From additive and subtractive manufacturing to robotics and inspection, our projects cover a wide spectrum of advanced manufacturing technologies.

Undertaken by our dedicated researchers alongside our esteemed partners at Oregon State University, Oregon Tech, and Portland State University, these projects aim to benefit the industry as a whole. The findings are not just results; they’re milestones in manufacturing excellence, published and available, as a membership benefit, to all our members.
